Doug Ford Must Get Serious About Reaching a Fair Deal: MPP Hunter

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 14, 2022

QUEEN’S PARK – Today, Mitzie Hunter, MPP for Scarborough–Guildwood and Ontario Liberal Education critic, released the following statement in response to the repeal of Bill 28:

“By repealing Bill 28, the Legislative Assembly has righted one of the Ford government's many wrongs. While Ontario Liberals are pleased to see the Premier and Minister of Education revoke their attack on workers' rights, they never should have considered invoking the notwithstanding clause to strong-arm education workers into settling for less than a living wage.

“Now, Stephen Lecce and Doug Ford must get serious about hammering out a fair deal for our education workers – one that pays those critical to our students’ success the compensation they deserve.

“According to the Financial Accountability Office of Ontario, the government is short-changing our education sector by $6.0 billion, parking historic amounts of tax-payer money in contingency funds. This money must be used to improve our public education system.

“As a former Minister of Education, I know that education workers are the frontline of public education. I know that these workers are fully committed to the future of our province and ensuring our children have the best start in life. That’s why I will continue to call on Stephen Lecce and Doug Ford to put in the hard work of negotiating a fair deal that pays our education workers a living wage.”
